Bill Shepherd

Bill's Story

Over the last 3 years I have used my  unique set of governance skills and experience, which includes sitting on the boards of both regional and national organisations across a wide range of sectors, for the benefit of the Northland Regional Council.

A passionate and proud Northlander, I was born in and have lived in the region all my life, contributing more than a third of my working life to community work, much of it unpaid. I understand the needs and issues of both rural and urban communities – through roles in farming, Treaty claims, business and tourism, and as the CEO of the Northland Chamber of Commerce.

I’ve headed or been a trustee of the NZ Hockey Federation, Hockey Northland, New Zealand Federated Farmers, Northland Business Development Trust, Enterprise Northland Trust, Northland Regional Council Community Trust, and Destination Northland Ltd.

I am a life member of Northland Federated Farmers, Hockey Northland and Hockey New Zealand and was awarded a Queens Service Medal in the 2015 New Year’s Honours for services to farming and hockey.

My governance training has involved studying rural leadership at Lincoln University, travelling to China and Korea on a leadership scholarship and specialised directorship training through the Institute of Directors and Local Government NZ.

I am financially independent; my wife and I earn our living from dairy farming and other non-farming business investments.

Bill's Guiding Principles

Family man, farmer, sportsman, politician – Bill Shepherd fulfils many roles but always with a quiet determination to improve the lives of others.

“Over the years, Bill has built up an impressive record of public service through consultation, prior research, careful thought and judicious action. He clearly does all he can to make our community a better place.”  - Murray Lints

Governance

Good governance with Councillors setting plans and objectives for their staff to implement. Councillors' role then becomes monitoring the outcomes not meddling in day-to-day management.

Financial Management

Prudent Financial management, delivering value for your rating dollar.

Environmental / Economic

Responsible environmental management and economic development can be achieved – we need to balance the needs of both while also speaking with one voice, to achieve Northland’s true potential.
